Description
In Metropolitan Region, Chile. It corresponds to the upper basin of the Maipo River (about 900 m a.s.l.), where it is enclosed by hills, cliffs and massifs. The area also has a series of confluent rivers such as the Volcán, Yeso and Colorado rivers, and other estuaries such as the San Gabriel, Manzanito, Coyanco, Sauce, Manzano and San José. Curiously, all the toponymy of the sector is absolutely in Spanish (with the exception of the name Maipo), although it is estimated that it was the place of residence of the Poyas, Chiquillanes and Puelches indigenous people who crossed from the pampas. On February 12, 1817, a detachment of the Liberation Army under the command of José León Lemus was sent by José de San Martín through this sector to distract the Royalist Army. He withdrew after attacking the San Gabriel garrison. In 1932 in the Lo Valdés sector the German Andean Club built one of the first mountain refuges in Chile. The shelter continues to operate today. On September 7, 1986, on the 'Cuesta de Las Achupallas' the attack against Augusto Pinochet took place.Includes
