The tourism sector is contributing to climate change. Tourism associated CO2 emissions were estimated to be around 5% of global emissions in 2005 . Since then, a variety of actions have been undertaken by tourism stakeholders worldwide, mainly with a focus on mitigation. Nevertheless, there is still limited public information on carbon emissions by tourism businesses and destinations. All in all, with international and domestic tourism arrivals expected to continue growing significantly, so is the responsibility of the tourism sector with regards to advancing the climate agenda - especially when 42 % of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement mention tourism explicitly.
Themes to be addressed:
The symposium and annual meeting will discuss among others:
1. Tourism sector’s potential to support countries in reaching the objectives of the climate agenda at national and local levels, including through policy instruments and measurement and monitoring of emissions among others;
2. Latest studies, innovative solutions and business cases paving the way to transform tourism to a low carbon sector, including recommended strategies and inspiring best practices for the transportation sub-sectors such as cruise lines, aviation, land-based transportation, etc;
3. Digital technologies’ and artificial intelligence role in the tourism industry: from new, revolutionary business models and tourism experiences to innovative ways of supporting and facilitating low-carbon decision-making;
4. Strategies and business models to integrate circularity and innovation into the tourism value chain to support sustainable tourism development in the context of a changing climate, increasing plastic pollution, and biodiversity loss;
5. Opportunities to continue supporting progress towards low carbon economies and biodiversity conservation leveraging collaboration within the tourism sector and within the framework of the One Planet Sustainable Tourism Programme’s 2020-2024 strategy.
