Teatro Universidad de Chile
Located in a center of Santiago, in front of Plaza Italia, the Universidad de Chile Theater is one of the main spaces for the dissemination of musical arts and contemporary dance in the country. It is administered by the Artistic and Cultural Extension Center of the University of Chile, CEAC, an organization that in 1987 made a rental agreement with the former Baquedano Theater, thus achieving a place suitable for the requirements of the groups and allowing the planning of an Official Season of concerts and ballet, which took shape in 1989, at which time it was renamed Teatro Universidad de Chile. The Universidad de Chile Theater is located on the first floor of the Turri buildings, a residential complex located in the commune of Providencia and considered one of the main architectural landmarks of the city, representative of the 1920s. The construction, cataloged as Historical Conservation Property, was designed by architect Guillermo Schneider Vergara, at the request of businessman Enrique Turri, and built in 1929, characterized by its Art Deco style. At the time of its construction, it was located next to the Pirque Station, which was demolished in 1943 giving rise to Bustamante Park, and in front of the Baquedano roundabout. On the first floor of the central building, a theater was built, then called Cine Palacio, which was inaugurated in 1931 as Teatro Baquedano, and which later became the Teatro Universidad de Chile.
