About O'Brien Underwater Naval Museum
The O'Brien submarine belongs to the Oberón class and was built in 1971 in Scotland, at the request of the Chilean Navy, arriving in the city of Punta Arenas on August 10, 1976. After having completed 25 years of service it was discharged on December 31, 2001, being acquired by the Municipality of Valdivia to be used for its current use. It is the second of the Oberón class that remains afloat in the world and is one of the three submarines that exist in South America as a museum.
Visiting the submarine allows to know the experience that the crew faced every day, especially when it was maintained for long periods of time under the sea: the dimensions of the submarine, its capacity to travel and maximum speed, its equipment and weapons, the machine department, engines, crew cabins and the control room of the warship.
