In Chile, the area of Patagonia does not exist as a political entity, constituting only an imaginary limit. Traditionally, Chilean Patagonia is considered to begin east of the Seno de Reloncaví in the Lake District, and from there it continues south. According to the political division of the country, it includes the province of Palena and the regions of Aysén and Magallanes. In some minor sources, the region may extend northwards, reaching 39º S latitude, at the height of Valdivia.

It covers an area characterized by low temperatures and abundant rainfall, in the form of rain or snow. The main cities are (from north to south): Coyhaique, Puerto Aysén, Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas and Puerto Williams.

The extreme south has a population of more than 200,000 inhabitants. The population of this area is mainly descended from Chilean immigrants, especially from Chiloe and other areas south of the Biobío, and from foreign immigrants of Croatian and Spanish origin or to a lesser extent from other European countries that colonized the area more than a century ago. The Croatian community was established in Punta Arenas, Magallanes. The massive arrival of Croatians to Chile began in 1864 and the migration grew steadily until 1956 to reach a number of over 58,000 Croatians living mainly in the extreme south of Chile.

Exotic, extensive, infinitely beautiful and wild. This is how the explorers who arrived almost 500 years ago described Patagonia. This is how it remains to this day. Come and see this unpolite nature, full of mountains, fjords, glaciers, forests and steppes! Amidst the cinematographic landscapes you will discover pioneer cities and towns, where you can breathe in a cattle history and the style of the Patagonian gaucho. Travel by car or bicycle along the Carretera Austral to marvel at the best of northern Patagonia.

If you love trekking, Torres del Paine is your north: forests, hills, waterfalls, lakes and privileged views of the Southern Ice Fields will be part of your experience. For a unique and adventurous trip, explore the southernmost part of the American continent and embark on an Antarctic experience. Sail through the fjords and channels; and also, through the Strait of Magellan.

Torres del Paine National Park

Enjoy the imposing and millenary presence of hundreds of glaciers, together with dolphins, penguins and killer whales. Reach Cape Horn, the southernmost point of the continent, or continue beyond it until you reach Antarctica, a scientific and ecological treasure that you cannot miss.
