Humboldt Penguin National Reserve

It is formed by three islands at the border of both regions; Chañaral Island, Choros Island and Damas Island. Just as its name says, this reserve is known for the presence of a colony of Humboldt penguin, that can be easily observed by booking a tour. Beside the penguins, it’s possible to watch sea lions, dolphins and several birds. It has been reported that during the summer it is possible to watch sperm and blue whales.

Nuble National Reserve

The Ñuble National Reserve is a large protected area of more than 70,000 hectares in which it is difficult to enter due to the poor state of the access road and the little information available. Chaitén is a small volcanic caldera located on the flank of the Michinmahuida volcano in southern Chile. Before 2008, it consisted mainly of a rhyolitic lava dome last active 9,400 years ago. But in May 2008, Chaitén began erupting violently, producing numerous plumes, pyroclastic flows, and lahars, and building a new lava dome on the north side of the old one. The eruption has had serious consequences for the nearby town of Chaitén, inundating it with lahars and ash, and ash from the eruption has even disrupted travel and agriculture in surrounding countries.
