Dunes of Concon
The Dunes of Concon, officially named Campo dunar de la Punta de Concon, is a group of Chilean dunes located between the commune of Concon and the town of Renaca in the Metropolitan Area of Valparaíso. The dunes are used as a tourist attraction, mainly for the practice of sports such as sandboarding.
The dune field, whose geological origin dates from the Quaternary Period, is located on a marine terrace at more than 30 meters above sea level and has stable dunes. It has smaller shrubby vegetation, typical of the coastal scrubland of the North Chico coast of Chile, while the predominant fauna consists of populations of seabirds (especially migratory, such as chorlos and little players), and resting sites of sea lions and Humboldt penguins.
History
On August 5th, 1993 it was named Nature Sanctuary by Decree 481 of the Ministry of Education of Chile. On April 28th, 1994, the protected area was restricted to 12 of the 45 total hectares of the complex, by Decree 106 of the same ministry. This allowed the owners of unprotected land to project the construction of apartment buildings in the dunes, due to their high value and their location adjacent to tourist centers.
