Fishing & Sailing in Chile

Chile’s coastline stretches for thousands of kilometers and offers an unmatched playground for anyone who loves fishing or sailing. I’ve spent countless mornings launching my small boat near Valparaíso, where the ocean is cool and full of sea bass and corvina. And let me tell you, there’s something about the salty breeze and open water that’s just unbeatable here.

If you’re after big-game fishing, head down south around Chiloé or the fjords near Puerto Montt. The salmon season peaks in summer, but even spring has good catches if you know where to look. Sailors will appreciate the steady winds around the Bay of Valparaíso and the sheltered coves in the Lakes District. It’s not about luxury here, more the honest thrill of navigating Chile’s wild coastal waters.

One thing most visitors miss is timing the tides and local weather, talk to fishermen in small towns like Pichilemu or Castro and you’ll get gems of advice no app can provide. And if the sea’s a bit rough, that’s when the local fish truly come to life. Don’t be surprised if you end up chatting over a glass of pisco with your boat captain long after the sun has dipped below the horizon.
