It is a non-profit institution, born under the eaves of the former Universidad del Norte. After 20 years in this house of studies, their heritage assets through a bailment agreement pass to the Directorate of Libraries, Archives and Museums of Chile (DIBAM), establishing us on April 17, 1984 in the Regional Museum of Antofagasta.

This remarkable sculpture by Mario Irarrázabal is located in the Atacama Desert, next to the Pan-American Highway, 75 kilometers south of the city of Antofagasta. It was inaugurated on March 28, 1992 and consists of an eleven-meter reinforced concrete sculpture, which represents a left hand.

Commissioned to build Laird Brothers, Birkenhead, Poplar on Thames, in England, in 1864, according to the design of Captain Cowper Coles of the Royal Navy, under the "Ericsson" model. His construction contract was signed on August 12, 1864, between Ship Captain José María Salcedo, representing the government of Peru, and the Laird Brothers shipyards.

O'Brien Underwater Naval Museum

The O'Brien submarine belongs to the Oberón class and was built in 1971 in Scotland, at the request of the Chilean Navy, arriving in the city of Punta Arenas on August 10, 1976. After having completed 25 years of service it was discharged on December 31, 2001, being acquired by the Municipality of Valdivia to be used for its current use. It is the second of the Oberón class that remains afloat in the world and is one of the three submarines that exist in South America as a museum.
