Tinquilco Lake is one of the most attractive lakes in the Araucanía Region and is the main lake of the Huerquehue National Park.
Its waters are permanently clear and originate from
Lake Verde, Toro, and Chico, and the Escondida, Huerquehue, and Seca lagoons. In the east of the lake, there are different places for camping and a refuge that is located where the main path of the
National Park begins, where the traveler can climb several smaller lakes and forests of Araucarias.
In Lake Tinquilco you can practice fly fishing,
swimming, and kayaking. For those who do
trekking and hiking, there are different routes to know other charms offered by this place, a wonder in Chile.
The
Tinquilco Lake has an area of 110 ha, being the largest, with permanently clear waters, which originates from the drainage of the Verde, Toro, and Chico lakes and the Escondida, Huerquehue, Seca, and Sin Nombre lagoons through the Nirrico, Rincon, Puma, La Cascada, Mariluán and Seco estuaries. This lake drains through the
Quinchol River and is a tributary of the Liucura River which in turn flows to
Lake Villarrica through the Trancura River.
Weather: The climate is rainy temperate oceanic with
Mediterranean influence, abundant and constant rainfall even in summer. The average annual temperature is 11 ° C.
Flora: The flora is characterized by having specimens of mañíos, tepas, coigües, arrayanes, tineos, palmillas, lengas and the ancient araucarias.
Wildlife: The fauna is composed of some interesting specimens of birds: parrots choroyes, pitios, run-run, chucaos, cometocinos, tinticas, tiuques, guairabos, kingfishers, and the magnificent Magellan carpenters, peucos, and condors. In the winter season, (June-August), the
frozen lakes, the snowy park, and the wildlife that ventures a little more are a real spectacle, given the solitudes: foxes, pudúes, wild hares, chingues, coipos, and pumas.
Attractions: At the east end of the Lake it has a large number of camping sites and a tourist refuge that is located at the foot of the main path of the Huerquehue National Park that goes up to several smaller lakes and araucaria forests.
