É um tradicional bairro residencial de Santiago, que mostra suas próprias características em comparação com o avanço da modernidade que outros bairros da cidade mostram. Foi fundado com esse nome em homenagem à vitória do Exército de Restauração Unida na Batalha de Yungay, em 20 de janeiro de 1839, na Guerra contra a Confederação Peru-Boliviana. O principal ponto de referência e ponto de partida para turistas é a praça homônima, onde está localizado o Monumento ao Roto Chileno, que é uma homenagem ao chileno da cidade.
