Het is algemeen bekend dat het Plaza de Armas de Concepción wordt genoemd Plaza de la Independencia. Volgens de Nationale Dienst voor Toerisme (Sernatur) is dit de enige “Plaza de Armas” in Chili die een andere naam draagt dan de andere.



En inderdaad werd door Sernatur bevestigd dat de onafhankelijkheid van Chili werd uitgeroepen in de Plaza de Armas de Concepción op 1 januari 1818, toen Bernardo O'Higgins zo verklaarde en zwoer, voor het Patriottische Leger. Op deze manier werd op 1 januari 2018 200 jaar van dit historische evenement herdacht.
 


De Plaza de Armas de Concepción werd geboren in 1752, nadat de stad verhuisde vanaf de oorspronkelijke locatie nadat deze was verwoest door een aardbeving en tsunami. Volgens Educarchile werd het plein een “sociale ontmoetingsplaats waar de inwoners gewend waren om te praten over de actualiteit van de stad”. Later, in 1818, zou hij zijn naam veranderen naar Plaza de la Independencia dankzij Bernardo O'Higgins.
 
Later, in 1856, werd de fontein die momenteel in het midden van het plein staat toegevoegd. Deze werd gesticht in Liverpool, Engeland, deels gebeeldhouwd door de San Alejandro en Alejandro Strange en ontworpen door Augusto Bleuze, een Belgische artiest die, curieus genoeg, niet bekend was met huemules.
