È ben noto che la Plaza de Armas de Concepción è chiamata Plaza de la Independencia. In effetti, secondo il Servizio Nazionale del Turismo (Sernatur), questa è l'unica “Plaza de Armas” in Cile che porta un nome diverso da quello.



E il Sernatur ha anche affermato che, infatti, l'indipendenza del Cile è stata proclamata nella Plaza de Armas de Concepción il 1° gennaio 1818, quando Bernardo O'Higgins così dichiarò e giurò, di fronte all'esercito Patriota. In questo modo, il 1° gennaio 2018, sono stati commemorati 200 anni di questo evento storico.
 


La Plaza de Armas de Concepción nacque nel 1752, dopo che la città si trasferì dalla sua posizione originale dopo essere stata devastata da un terremoto e da uno tsunami. Secondo Educarchile, la piazza divenne un “luogo di incontro sociale dove gli abitanti parlavano della contingenza della città”. Successivamente, nel 1818, cambierà nome in Plaza de la Independencia grazie a Bernardo O'Higgins.
 
In seguito, nel 1856, è stata aggiunta la fontana che si trova attualmente al centro della piazza. Questa fu fondata a Liverpool, in Inghilterra, scolpita in parte da San Alejandro e Alejandro Strange e progettata da Augusto Bleuze, un artista belga che, curiosamente, non conosceva gli huemules.
