Description

Cerro Zapaleri, located in the Andes at 5,638 meters above sea level, marks the tri-border point where Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina converge. More than a geographical landmark, it carries historical and spiritual significance for indigenous communities who regard it as a sacred site connecting earth and sky.

The journey begins with a 10 a.m. departure from San Pedro de Atacama, traveling along CH-27 highway past the Monjes de la Pacana and the Aguas Calientes and Quepiaco Salt Flats. After two hours, the route turns onto a dirt road crossing the Altiplano, where mirror-like lagoons and the Zapaleri River appear. Camp is established around 5 p.m., followed by dinner and an overnight stay under clear desert skies.

On day two, the climb starts at 3 a.m. with a light breakfast. The ascent to the summit requires stamina rather than technical climbing skills and takes approximately 6 to 7 hours. At the peak, you reach the tri-border landmark before descending over 3 to 4 hours. By 4 p.m., the group returns to the vehicle for a meal before heading back to San Pedro de Atacama.
