The day begins with a 4 AM pickup from your accommodation or the agency in Pucón. The group travels 36 kilometers to the west face of Villarrica Volcano, also known as Rukapillan in Mapudungun, meaning 'House of the Spirits.'
At Villarrica National Park, participants prepare equipment and embark on a 4-kilometer hike through forests of centuries-old Coihue and millenary Araucaria trees, gaining 600 meters in elevation. Upon reaching the forest edge, take a short break with views of the volcano.
The trek continues 1.3 kilometers to the entrance of the Voipir glacier. After roping up, the guide delivers a safety briefing before the group begins climbing. The route offers panoramic views of nearby lakes and volcanoes.
By around 9 AM, you’ll reach the glacier’s crevasses and seracs, where guides set anchors and safety systems to start the ice climbing portion. This technical climb tests your skills on the vertical ice formations.
