City Walking Tour of Iquique and Baquedano Street
This guided walking tour in Iquique, Tarapacá Region, explores historic sites and architectural landmarks, ideal for history and architecture enthusiasts.
Description
The tour begins at Plaza 21 de Mayo, a seaside park in Iquique. It offers insight into the city's rich heritage, focusing on Calle Baquedano, a National Heritage Site since 1977 that reflects Iquique’s saltpeter era prosperity.
Calle Baquedano features buildings from the 1880s to 1920s that showcase a blend of local northern Chilean elements and styles from the diverse foreign population that influenced Iquique’s development. The architecture includes American styles like Georgian, Greek Revival, and Adam, predominantly constructed with Oregon pine.
Key landmarks along the street include the Clock Tower, Tarapacá Employees' Society Building, Municipal Theater, Astoreca Palace, Yugoslav Club, Former Courts of Justice, and Spanish Casino. Most of these historic sites are accessible during the tour.
The route passes by the former Iquique Naval Museum, housed in the historic Peruvian Customs building from 1871, now a national monument preserving the memory of the Naval Battle of Iquique. The Iquique Cathedral, rebuilt after a fire in 1833, will also be visited.
The tour concludes at the Corbeta Esmeralda Museum, featuring a scale replica of the ship linked to national hero Arturo Prat.
