Description

Your tour begins with hotel pickup in Hanga Roa. Start at Akahanga near the village, an important ceremonial site known as an ahu. Observe the iconic moai statues and hear about the tribal wars that caused some statues to be toppled. See the remains of hare paenga, the ancient boat-shaped stone houses constructed by the island’s early inhabitants.

Next, visit Ahu Tongariki, the island’s largest ahu, featuring 15 moai. Continue to Rano Raraku, the volcanic quarry where the moai were carved, and admire around 400 moai in different stages of sculpting.

The tour proceeds to Ahu Te Pito Kura, home to the island’s tallest moai and the Paro moai. Nearby is a large spherical stone regarded as the 'navel of the world' (Te Pito or Te Henua), which legend says arrived on the boat of Hotu Matua.

Then visit Anakena Beach, where Ariki Hotu Motua and his sister Avareipua are said to have landed. Here you can explore Ahu Nau Nau, an archaeological complex with five moai featuring pukao hats and petroglyphs on their backs. The tour concludes with a return to your hotel in Hanga Roa.
