Description
Experience one of the most fascinating aspects of Rapa Nui with this half-day excursion to Orongo and Rano Kau, a tour that combines archaeology, history, and breathtaking landscapes.
We will begin our tour at 9:30 a.m. from Hanga Roa, starting the journey to the majestic Rano Kau volcano, one of the island's most iconic natural settings.
Our first stop will be at Ana Kai Tangata, also known as the 'cave of the cannibals.' This easily accessible site surprises visitors with its mystical atmosphere and the remains of rock art still preserved inside, depicting seabirds that played a fundamental role in Rapa Nui beliefs.
We will then continue to the archaeological site of Orongo, an ancient ceremonial village located on the western peak of the Rano Kau volcano. This site consists of some 53 stone houses with narrow entrances facing the sea, offering an environment steeped in history and mysticism.
Orongo was the site of the Tangata Manu or 'Birdman' ceremony, the most important of the island's second period. Each year, brave competitors descended the cliffs and swam to the islet of Motu Nui to collect the first egg of the manutara bird. The winner was awarded the sacred title for his clan for one year. This ritual continued until approximately 150 years ago, when the arrival of the first Christian missionaries transformed the cultural life of the island.
In addition to its historical and cultural value, Orongo offers one of the most spectacular views of Rapa Nui, with the Rano Kau crater and the Pacific Ocean on the horizon. It is a setting that invites you to take memorable photographs and connect with the grandeur of the place.
This tour is ideal for those who want to immerse themselves in the island's ancient history, learn about the legends of the Birdman, and marvel at the volcanic landscapes that make Rapa Nui a unique destination in the world.
