Directions to La Piojera
La Piojera is undoubtedly one of the meeting places where the most genuine forms of popular urban links can be recognized. Eternal toasts, spontaneous songs, conversations together with the flavor of tasty pichangas and a fraternity in every way.
The place functions as a bar since 1896 and several have been their names, such as 'Santiago Antiguo' or 'Bar Democratico', to name a few. The legend has it that in 1922, during a ceremony of the Investigative Police nearby, which was attended by the President of the Republic, Don Arturo Alessandri Palma, the director of the entity told him that he would show him a bit where he is going the village. When arriving, before the precariousness of the place, the President explained: 'And this piojera they brought to me !?' Since then the place is known under this name, but it was not until 1981 that the sign was put on the front, finally surrendering to general recognition.
In 2003, the popular clamor prevented the building from being demolished for the construction of an evil, being that same year named 'Monument of the Feelings of the Nation' by the Guachaca movement to disrupt the size of the city against the republican heart.
At least five Presidents of Chile have passed through this place: Arturo Alessandri Palma, Juan Antonio Rios, Eduardo Frei Montalva, Salvador Allende Gossers and Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle. Famous writers have been faithful parishioners.
