Museum for samtidskunst, avhengig av Fakultet for Kunst ved Universitetet i Chile, ble opprettet i 1947. I løpet av sine seks tiår med drift har MAC satt sammen en samling chilensk kunst på mer enn 2.000 verk.
 
De mest komplette og viktige samlingene er de innenfor maleri, med omtrent 600 verk, grafikk med nesten tusen eksemplarer og tegninger, tempera og akvareller som samler rundt 130 verk.
 
De midlertidige utstillingene som holdes på MAC, har etablert det som hovedscenen for spredning av nasjonal og internasjonal samtidskunst i landet og som en lanseringsplattform for unge chilenske kunstnere. Siden 2005 har MAC to vernede steder: MAC Parque Forestal og MAC Quinta Normal.
