The Museum of Antofagasta
From the year 2008, they offer a new permanent exhibition distributed in 12 rooms, in addition to an Auditorium for the assembly of temporary and itinerant exhibitions and the realization of extension activities.
They are currently developing work in two buildings that correspond to the old Customs and Maritime Government buildings, both declared National Monuments, located in the historical and foundational core of Antofagasta, considered a typical area of the city.
The building of the former Maritime Government, opened in 1910, houses administrative offices, specialized heritage library, laboratory, and deposits of cultural property collections. They were born as a historical museum in 1964, under the direction of the former University of the North.
The building of the old Customs, reinstalled in the city in 1888, on its two floors houses the permanent exhibition that covers various aspects of the biodiversity of the desert coast and the culture and history of the inhabitants of Antofagasta, from prehistory to the present day; recognizing the main landmarks of the natural, economic, social and cultural past of the coastal area of Antofagasta, emphasizing significantly the emergence and evolution of the city, highlighting its heritage and identity.
